Monday, 8 July 2019 Los Angeles Old and New (includes lunch)

Be amazed by some of the most iconic sights in the City of Angels as we visit landmarks from yesterday and today in Hollywood and Los Angeles’ revitalized downtown.

We begin our tour in Hollywood at the Dolby Theatre, home to the Academy Awards. On a clear day, you can get a glimpse of the famous Hollywood sign high in the hills. Have your camera ready here for a perfect picture of the sign, and then next door at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Built in 1922, this landmark has been home to many blockbuster movie premieres, including Star Wars. Compare your foot and hand imprints to those of the legends of the silver screen embedded in the theatre courtyard and see the celebrity stars along the adjacent Hollywood Walk of Fame.

After a brief glimpse of Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, a quick stop at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park celebrates the lives of popular celebrities. Numerous show business legends, including Marilyn Monroe (1962), Dean Martin (1995), Burt Lancaster (1997), and more recently, Florence Henderson (2016) and Tom Petty (2017), are laid to rest in the beautifully manicured cemetery.

As we enter downtown Los Angeles, with its symbolic place in American history, our next stops include one of the city’s commercial centers for the Chinese and Asian community, as well as lunch.

Afterwards, our day continues with visits to some of the most famous and interesting sites in downtown LA, including Union Station (considered “the last of the great train stations”), various movie set locations, and the site of the sensational O.J. Simpson criminal trial.

The tour includes moderate walking, air-conditioned motor coach transportation, and English-speaking guides.

Tuesday, 9 July San Juan Capistrano (includes lunch)

Spend the day touring San Juan Capistrano, one of the most historic towns in California. This excursion captures your imagination as you experience iconic landmarks dating back nearly 250 years.

What better place to start the day than at the 242-year-old Mission San Juan Capistrano, named after Italian saint Giovanni da Capistrano. The mission, which is now owned by the Catholic Church, was established to expand Spain’s territory in the region and to spread Christianity throughout California. The tour guides bring to life the rich history of this 10-acre mission, which includes a Basilica and school that have survived earthquakes, bankruptcy, war, and the tremendous growth of the Golden State.

After our visit to the Mission comes local culinary delights for lunch.

Our day continues with a guided walking tour of the Los Rios Historic District, strolling along beautiful Los Rios Street, the oldest preserved residential street in California. Our tour includes colorful insights into many historic buildings, including the Victorian Pryor House.
